Retail = Right Location = Targeted Right Geography

We discussed the crucial importance of location in the dynamic retail sector and the critical factors to consider before deciding and finalizing the optimal location.

There is another crucial aspect of your presence: geographical representation. Let's delve deeper into this fascinating data.

Below are the top Indian cities by population:

Delhi: 34 million

Mumbai: 22 million

Kolkata: 16 million

Bangalore: 14 million

Chennai: 12 million

If we look at the top seven companies (only listed players) in the QSR sector, with a combined market cap of 81,000 crore, a significant portion of their business comes from the above vibrant cities.

Now, the question is, which are the top cities in each state where the population is 10 million and above? In other words, where are there more populous cities like Chennai or Mumbai (only from a population count perspective, not from per capita data, which we will discuss in another blog)?

Below are the top cities in each state with a population of 1 million and above:

Uttar Pradesh: 10 Cities - Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Meerut, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Bareilly, Aligarh, Moradabad, Saharanpur

Kerala: 7 Cities - Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Kollam

Maharashtra: 6 Cities - Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, Solapur

Tamil Nadu: 7 Cities - Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruppur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem

Gujarat: 4 Cities - Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot

Madhya Pradesh: 4 Cities - Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior

Karnataka: 3 Cities - Bengaluru, Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad

Jharkhand: 3 Cities - Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Dhanbad

Punjab: 3 Cities - Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar

Rajasthan: 3 Cities - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota

West Bengal: 3 Cities - Kolkata, Asansol, Siliguri

Andhra Pradesh: 2 Cities - Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada

Chhattisgarh: 2 Cities - Raipur, Durg-Bhilai Nagar

Telangana: 2 Cities - Hyderabad, Warangal

Assam: 1 City - Guwahati

Bihar: 1 City - Patna

Odisha: 1 City - Bhubaneswar

Uttarakhand: 1 City - Dehradun

Chandigarh: 1 City - Chandigarh

Delhi: 1 City - New Delhi

Jammu & Kashmir: 1 City - Srinagar

In total, 65 Indian cities have a population of more than 1 million, whereas China has 105 such cities, and the US has 9.

Conclusion: While we understand the paramount importance of choosing the right location, we should be clear in our strategic approach about who our customers are and which top cities and clusters we, as a company, want to target.
